Laurie E. Martin

Laurie E. Martin is an associate with Hoover Hull LLP. She practices in the areas of business litigation, employment defense, ERISA, and professional liability defense. Laurie was selected for inclusion on the 2010 Indiana Rising Stars list in Indiana Super Lawyers magazine.

    Laurie graduated with a journalism degree from Butler University, magna cum laude, with departmental honors in 2000. While at Butler, she competed her honors thesis, Hate Speech Regulation on Campus: Necessary Protection or First Amendment Violation?, served as Editor-in-Chief of Butler's student newspaper, The Collegian, and spent a semester abroad at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Following graduation, Laurie worked for Ambassadair Travel Club as a tour coordinator, web marketing editor, and contributor to Journey Magazine.

    Laurie attended Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis, graduating summa cum laude in 2006. She served as Editor-in-Chief of the Indiana Law Review, was named to the Order of Barristers, completed forty hours of certified civil mediation training, and was named Chancellor's Scholar. Laurie also served as a judicial intern for the Honorable Chief Judge Larry J. McKinney in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

    Professional Associations, Memberships and Community Service

    Laurie helps individuals obtain civil protective orders through the Protective Order Pro Bono Project and serves as an intake volunteer for the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic. Laurie serves on the Resource Development Committee of the Little Red Door Cancer Agency and the "Go Green" Committee of the Young Lawyers Division of the Indianapolis Bar Association. Laurie is a member of the American, Seventh Circuit, Indiana State, and Indianapolis Bar Associations. Laurie is also an alumna of the Indianapolis chapter of the Sagamore American Inn of Court.

    Representative Cases

    Bandak v. Eli Lilly & Co. Retirement Plan, 587 F.3d 798 (7th Cir. 2009) (ERISA; affirming District Court judgment for Plaintiff; finding retirement plan's offset of Plaintiff's pension benefits arbitrary and capricious and awarding Plaintiff's attorneys' fees and costs).

    Hughes v. Indianapolis Radio License Co., No. 1:07-cv-81-WTL-TAB, 2009 WL 226209 (S.D. Ind. Jan. 30, 2009) (Employment discrimination under Title VII, 42 U.S.C. § 1981; granting in part and denying in part Defendant's motions in limine with regard to testimony regarding other allegations of discrimination (granted), testimony regarding the racial composition of Defendant's workforce (granted), hearsay statements (granted in part), testimony regarding treatment of other employees (granted in part), testimony that Plaintiff visited Planned Parenthood (agreed/moot), Plaintiff's use of her diary (granted), redaction of portions of Plaintiff's diary if offered by Defendant (granted in part)).
