Referral Relationships
As a litigation boutique law firm, Hoover Hull LLP’s business is centered on serving attorneys and their clients in litigated matters. While we serve a base of dedicated clients, we also enjoy developing referral and co-counsel relationships with firms and lawyers seeking lead counsel or local counsel for their clients, or who need to resolve an actual or potential conflict of interest that they may have in specific matters. In all cases, we respect the pre-existing relationship between the client and referring lawyer, and value the opportunity to serve the client in what may be a single engagement.
Local Counsel Arrangements
Our lawyers frequently practice before both state and federal courts located in the Indianapolis metropolitan area and elsewhere in Indiana. We often advise out-of-state lawyers and their clients regarding the intricacies of local rules, practice and procedure, and relish the opportunity to lend our unique talents and focus to collaborate in a larger capacity in co-counsel arrangements. We value our selection into the membership of the International Network of Boutique Law Firms (INBLF) as a means to further our desire to develop lasting relationships with out-of-state counsel.
Lead Counsel Arrangements
Hoover Hull LLP’s founders sought to add value to clients by packaging their unique expertise in business and commercial litigation in a boutique firm setting. Because the firm’s practice has that predominant focus, when our network of clients and friends have needs that extend beyond dispute resolution and prevention, we often refer them to lawyers who specialize in other disciplines. Likewise, we enjoy working with lawyers who refer their clients to us when presented with actual or threatened litigation. In such cases, Hoover Hull LLP endeavors only to manage the client’s litigation, while the referring lawyer continues to serve as the client’s general counsel and/or to assist the client with its non-litigation needs. We have found that our referral relationships with other lawyers are often mutually beneficial, and enjoy opportunities to establish and foster ongoing referral relationships.
Conflicts of Interest
One of the advantages Hoover Hull LLP enjoys as a litigation boutique firm is that we are usually free of the ethical conflicts of interest that prevent firms from accepting a client representation, or from representing a client’s affiliates or agents, such as directors, officers, employees and shareholders. In the former situation, we acknowledge and respect the pre-existing relationship between the referring lawyer and his or her client, and endeavor to provide high-quality service for the duration of the litigation matter only. In the latter situation in which we are asked to represent a co-defendant, the referring lawyer can be assured that we understand the sensitivities that accompany joint defense arrangements and will seek to collaborate to gain efficiencies when appropriate. In the past, many of our conflict-of-interest referrals have come from former opposing counsel, who entrust us with the privilege of handling their client’s most complex litigation needs.
